Rebates & Tax CreditsBookmark and Share

As you begin identifying possible home projects to improve energy efficiency, increase your comfort and decrease your carbon footprint, you should first look into available financial options and rebates offered by your local utility company. Many states require utilities to offer energy efficiency programs. These programs can range from incentives, free home energy assessments, to rebates for the purchase of energy efficient appliances and equipment.

DSIRE

Another good resource for state, local, utility, and federal incentives is the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) maintained by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) For 2011, federal tax credits still exist — but at a reduced value compared with 2010 (capped at $500) and with changes to some qualifying equipment standards. Beginning on January 1, 2011 and lasting through December 31, 2011, an eligible homeowner can claim 10% of the costs for the installation of qualified energy efficient improvements. Note also that any homeowner who has claimed more than $500 in 25C tax credits since January 1, 2005, will now be disqualified from any further credits.

For additional information on tax credits, talk to either your tax consultant or visit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website.
